New certification tests released by IFPS
The International Fluid Power Society (IFPS) has released newly revised Mobile Hydraulic Mechanic (MHM), Mobile Hydraulic Technician (MHT), and Connector and Conductor (CC) Certification Tests including new study manuals for each certification. Certification requires successful completion of a three-hour written and a three-hour job performance (hands-on) test. IFPS Members may download complimentary study manuals; non-members may purchase the manuals.
Miniature encoders
TRD-MX Series of Koyo miniature encoders provides a cost-effective solution for size-limited applications. Light-duty encoders feature a small body with 25-mm diameter and 29-mm depth. Constructed with a 4-mm diameter solid shaft, they offer resolutions from 100 to 1024 pulses/rev.
Milwaukee Fluid Power Conference & Expo, May 2008

Here's just a few pictures I took when we last visited Milwaukee for our Fluid Power Conference & Expo, back in the spring on 2008. We will be returning to that great city June 11-12, hosting the event the Milwaukee School of Engineering.

Custom hydraulic reservoirs
Aluminized steel hydraulic oil reservoirs and fuel tanks for off-road and specialty vehicles used in agricultural, construction, and other utility equipment combine corrosion resistance of aluminum with structural strength (and lower cost) of steel.
Spiral hydraulic hose
Alfagomma Flexor spiral hydraulic hoses are available in sizes from 1⁄4 to 2 in. Four-wire -12 is rated for maximum working pressures from 17.5 to 28 MPa (2500 to 4000 psi). Four-wire 4SP is rated for pressures of 28 to 45 MPa (4000 to 6550) psi. Four-wire 4SH is rated for maximum working pressure of 25 to 42 MPa (3650 to 6000 psi). Four- or six-wire -13 is rated for maximum working pressures of 35 MPa (5000 psi).
Stainless-steel air cylinders

NITRA pneumatic product line now includes F-Series air cylinders for wash-down applications. Non-repairable round body air cylinders are interchangeable with other brands. Double-acting cylinders have a 250 psi operating pressure and are constructed with corrosion resistant 300 Series stainless steel and Teflon-based rod and pivot bushings. Urethane rod wiper keeps wash-down solutions out of the cylinder. Series includes bore sizes from ¾- to 2 in. and stroke lengths from ½- to 18 in.

Spring-wind hose reel
N500 series high-pressure, spring-rewind reel is designed for efficient hydraulic or air hose handling. Heavy-duty spring motor with self-contained rewind power, four-way roller assembly and a declutching arbor prevent against damage from reverse winding.
Piston pump and compressor

Series 319 oil-less, WOB-L piston dc pump and compressor is small and lightweight (5.1 lb/2.3 Kg). Die-cast aluminum components provide strength and durability. It provides up to 150 psi (10.4 bar) of maximum intermittent pressure, and 93% local barometer of maximum vacuum. Corrosion resistant e-coated exterior finish, stainless steel inlet valve, thermally protected motor and inlet filter/exhaust muffler all provide quiet operation. It is available with 12 and 24 Vdc motor and dryer/solenoid.

Industrial jobs website updated
Industrial Careers Pathway (ICP) redesigned its website to attract more job seekers to careers in industrial distribution and manufacturing. The mobile-enabled site is divided into three sections. The Work section highlights positions in a dynamic feed on every page; allows users to post resumes; and features social media feeds and video testimonials.
50 years ago: Cylinders actuate power mower

Hydraulic cylinders actuate and position the end section of this 15-ft highway power mower, manufactured by Engler Mfg. Co., Houston. The mower was designed to follow the contour of the terrain without scalping ridges and high spots. It also enables the operator to raise either end section when the mower nears obstacles such as mailboxes, utility poles or concrete culverts.

Rebuilding Cat machines simplified with cylinder honing

Rebuilding heavy equipment makes good economic sense, particularly for the hydraulic components on construction and earth moving machinery. In fact, the trend since 2008 has been strong enough to support the addition of a machine shop as part of the existing hydraulics shop at Caterpillar dealer Whayne Supply. Key among the shop's equipment is a Sunnen HTA tube hone, which allows Whayne to resurface scratched and rusted cylinder barrels, saving customers 80 percent or more over the cost of a new barrel.

Control system integrators say industry outlook is good

A recent global survey of independent system integration companies offers a positive outlook for business this year, with the majority of respondents saying they believe the outlook for the automation industry will improve in 2013.
