Competing on the Global Stage

The 2011 Annual Conference of the National Fluid Power Association will be held at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort in Bonita Springs, Florida on February 16-19, 2011. The focus of this year's conference will be the many aspects of dealing with the global economy.

For many years, fluid power component manufacturers have gone more global. Now, after the Great Recession has reshaped the business landscape, going global is more of a necessity. In order to compete in the current and future environment, companies must have a clear plan and strategy for global competition.

The keynote speaker for the Conference will be John Ferriola, COO of Nucor Steel Corp. This large global provider of steel products has demonstrated how to compete over the decades since its expansion under former CEO Ken Iverson. I had the honor of meeting with Mr. Iverson in the 1990s as he looked after his company's advertising campaigns even as CEO of the company. I learned a lot about business from listening to Ken and reading about his accomplishments at Nucor Steel.

It will be great to hear an update on the company from Mr. Ferriola. There are many other great speakers scheduled for this year's event. This meeting provides a distinct opportunity to grasp the size and direction of the fluid power industry. That is why Hydraulics & Pneumatics magazine has been a active member of the NFPA for so many years.
