The second day of EOC 2008 was started with a networking continental breakfast in the presence of some NFPA Supplier Tabletop Displays. I am happy to say that Hydraulics & Pneumatics had the opportunity to participate in the Tabletop Displays and we were quite pleased with the networking made available. We met new people and renewed acquaintances at the event.
The first speaker on the schedule was current Chairman of the Executive Board, Dave Anderson of Sauer Danfoss. He gave a very warm welcome to all attendees and got the formal presentations going with his introduction of first presenter, Erik Peterson of the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS). He is a colleague of former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
Erik’s theme was Revolution and not the negative kind that brings chaos but the kind that is the result of change. He outlined seven areas of revolution and the presentation can be found at www.nfpa.org. It was a most interesting presentation that was very thought provoking. Great job Erik!
Following a very nice lunch, again in the presence of the tabletop displays, the group of attendees was divided into those interested in knowing more about mobile equipment forecasts and those interested in Industrial Market forecasts. In the mobile track, the speakers were Chuck Yengst of Yengst Associates who gave an overview of construction, agricultural and mining machine markets. His presentation was, unfortunately, not very encouraging. He was followed by Eric Starks of FTR Associates on On-Highway Trucks and then Bill Harley on Outdoor Power Equipment.
Following a quick break, EOC favorite Eli Lustgarten of ESL Consultants, Inc. gave his macro view of industrial markets as they relate to fluid power sales and shipments. Again, his forecast was a little pessimistic but Eli was careful to ease the tensions of the nearly 300 delegates by telling them that things are down economically but not terrible.
The final speaker of the day was Stuart Rothenberg of Rothenberg Political Report who changed the pace a little by discussing politics. He gave many very insights on the upcoming presidential election as well as some of the Congressional races being contested.
The day was concluded by a really cool Power of Association Networking Dinner at Chicago Indoor Racing. In addition to food, drink and refreshments, the attendees were treated to an opportunity for some indoor go cart racing. It was great fun for all.
