Learning about bio-based hydraulic fluids

In the February issue of Hydraulics & Pneumatics, David Sundin, Ph.d., from SVB Environmental Lubricants presents and interesting and educational tutorial about bio-based hydraulic fluids. In some applications, these fluids are found to have significant advantages. In this article titled Selection and use of bio-based hydraulic fluids, the author describes some of these advantages.

He gives some definitions of fluids and their contents and reviews applicable industry standards. Specifically, vegetable oil advantages, limitations, and other characteristics are discussed. The article concludes that vegetable-based natural ester fluids offer several advantages in hydrauilc system applications compared to other types of hydraulic fluids.
