The Power of Advertising

I am a golfer. I recently visited Dick's Sporting Goods to buy a new golf glove and some golf balls. While there, the hybrid clubs caught my attention because my friend Jim has been using these hybrids and advised me to also.

Surrounded by row after row of hybrid clubs sticking out of their showcase holders like so many cattails in a creekbed, I had no real idea of which one I wanted or needed. I picked up the one that was on sale for the lowest price available. I asked the sales clerk, "Would this one be good for me? It's a Maxfli."

The clerk responded, "No it's a Nickent, and yes, it would be find for you."

"Nickent, what is that, I never heard of it?"

"It is a very popular brand, you will see it advertised in many of the golf magazines" was his reply.

I thought, well then, the price is right, it is a popular brand because it is advertised in golf magazines. I will be proud of it. So I bought it.

I never saw the magazine, never made an inquiry.
