PC game introduces engineering problem solving ... on the sly

June 1, 2004
Talking to kids about engineering as a career path has never been easy. With today's distractions, from MTV to video games like Grand Theft Auto, what is a parent to do?
Talking to kids about engineering as a career path has never been easy. With today's distractions, from MTV to video games like Grand Theft Auto, what is a parent to do?

Enter Time Engineers, a well-thought-out video game from Software Kids LLC. Designed by award-winning interactive developer Ray Shingler, the CD-ROM (for use on PCs only) teaches math, science, physics, and history, built around a time travel storyline.

Children (or adults who try their hand at the game) are introduced to important concepts such as binary numbers, Boolean logic, statics, water flow, force balance, and trajectory — all while trying to build pyramids, irrigate farmlands, operate drawbridges, and navigate submarines. The "stops" in the time travel include a factory, ancient Egypt, the Middle Ages, and World War II.

The game was created in conjunction with Valparaiso University's College of Engineering, and is available for single purchase ($24.95), in lab packs of 5 or 10, or even as site license format. For more information, or to order, visit www.timeengineers.com.
