I would like to draw your attention to the story in our December issue of Hydraulis & Pneumatics about a hydraulic motocycle. You can read about it in our print issue, read it on our website, or go to our digital edition.
If you use our digital issue with the above link, I welcome you to advance to the very last page of the issue after reading the article. There you will find an offer to sign up for a free subscription to our monthly magazine. That will also entitle you to our digital Fluid Power Handbook & Directory as we will be resending it in 2012.
This is a great story about how a fluid power designer used hydraulics and his ingenuity to power a chopper. He even thought to cool the hydraulc oil tank with a heat exachanger because on such a motorcycle, you have to sit over the tank.
I know a little about how hydrostatic transmissions drive and power work trucks and off-highway vehicles. It appears that the designer of the chopper, Ron Holcomb of Hydradyne Hydraulics in Houston utilized some of the same pricipals to power this motorcycle.
We often report on such interesting special application machines in the pages of Hydraulics & Pneumatics. Of course, our main function is to report on how fluid power systems power machinery for both industrial and mobile applications.
