As electrification continues to grow in the heavy mobile equipment industry, there are several factors to consider during the development of components and systems used in these machines.
According to DJ O’Konek, engineering manager at Nott Co., efficiency is the key aspect which needs to be taken into consideration when developing the electro-hydraulic and full-electric systems utilized in these electrified machines. Doing so ensures enough energy will be available for the machines to perform work during a given period.
“Everybody is relying on batteries on the vehicles when you're doing this [electrification], and it's not like you can run down to the gas station to get a can of electrons,” said O’Konek in an interview with Power & Motion. “Efficiency becomes key to get the runtime that's required.”
By utilizing efficient components and systems, less energy is drawn from the battery to ensure it can provide a full day of operation—or whatever the given timeframe is—before recharging is necessary. And for heavy machinery such as construction or agricultural equipment, a charging station may not be as readily accessible which necessitates machines can get as long a run time as possible before recharging.
